How To Prepare Your Commercial Vehicle for Summer: The Easy Checklist
Summer’s heat is coming fast. Big trucks, work vans, and all commercial vehicles need your help to stay safe. You want your truck to work every day. You do not want a breakdown on a hot road. I can help you get ready. CLW GROUP is here for you. We build strong trucks and offer top after-sales and technical services. Read this guide — keep your business rolling, cool and safe all summer.
Why You Must Get Your Truck Ready
Hot weather can make trucks break. The cooling system will work harder. Tires can blow out. Batteries get weak in the heat. If you miss a step, it might cost a lot to fix later. You lose time and money if things go wrong.
Look at these facts:
Problem | How Heat Hurts | What Happens Next | Fix It Early and Save |
---|---|---|---|
Engine Overheating | Fast coolant loss, strain | Breakdowns often in summer | Check coolant, hoses, fans |
Tire Failures | Hot air raises pressure | More blowouts and flats | Test tire pressure, inspect |
Weak Batteries | Heat speeds up wear | Difficult to start engine | Test and clean battery |
Bad Brakes | Summer heat weakens brakes | Harder to stop, more danger | Inspect, change pads early |
Driver Fatigue | Cab gets too hot | Tired drivers, slow reaction | Cool AC, rest and hydrate |
Don’t let small things stop your big plans. Use my checklist. Keep money in your pocket and your fleet moving.
Important Things To Check and Fix
Let’s use a simple checklist to keep every commercial vehicle — your truck, van, box truck, tipper truck, or semi-trailer tractor — ready for the hottest days.
- Cooling System
- Check coolant. Is it full and clean? Flush if dirty.
- Look at radiator, hoses, and belts. No cracks or leaks.
- Test the fan and thermostat. Fans must spin well.
- Check radiator cap. It needs a tight fit.
- Tires and Wheels
- Test tire pressure cold. Tires gain pressure in the heat.
- Look for tread wear and damage (bulges, cuts).
- Check valve stems, caps, and spare tire.
- Wheel bearings need to be tight and smooth.
- Engine and Fluids
- Check oil, transmission, and power steering fluids. Top up if needed. Use thicker oil in summer for heavy duty.
- Inspect differential fluid.
- Look at brake fluid. Top up and change if dirty.
- Washer fluid for the windshield should be full.
- Brakes
- Look at pads and rotors. Are they worn out?
- Check brake lines for leaks or rub spots.
- Test parking brake.
- Flush brake fluid if it looks dirty.
- Battery & Electrical System
- Test your battery. Heat drains batteries fast.
- Clean terminals and connectors.
- Inspect alternator and starter.
- Check all truck lights and wiring.
- Air Conditioning (AC) and HVAC
- Turn on the AC. Does it blow cold?
- Check refrigerant. Let a pro fill it.
- Look at the cabin air filter. Change it if it’s dirty.
- Does air flow from the vents fast?
- Wipers and Windows
- Change old wiper blades. Summer rain can hit hard.
- Fill the washer system. Clean windshields mean safe driving.
- Emergency Kit
- Pack first aid gear
- Bring water, snacks, reflectors
- Add tools and cables
- Hot weather? Pack extra water and salt or electrolytes
- Steering and Suspension
- Look under the truck. No broken springs, shocks, or loose steering parts.
- Grease suspension joints if needed.
- Fuel System
- Check fuel lines for cracks.
- Replace dirty fuel filters
I use these steps at CLW GROUP when we prep every delivery truck or van.
Don’t Forget The Driver
Your drivers are part of the team. The cab can get very hot. Heat makes drivers tired. You must keep drivers safe so they do not get sick.
- Always have water ready
- Rest often
- Plan routes away from traffic jams
- Make sure every driver knows how to check for signs of tiredness
A safe driver is as important as a strong vehicle.
Remember Your Cargo
If you carry food or cold goods, the reefer unit must work. Always check:
- Cargo temperature
- Refrigeration system
- Secure every box and package
